2010 Event Volunteers

Due to changes at the state level, we may have as many as 64 teams at our qualifier this year. That could mean as many as 600 students and over 2000 attendees. We're going to need a lot of help!  We need you!

We'll be staffing a variety of different volunteer positions. If you'd like to volunteer, please send an email to our Competition Director, Marie Bush, at marie@50robots.com.  Here are some of the positions we'll be staffing along with their requirements.

Project Judges:  Each team will do a research project on this year's topic and present it to our project judges in a creative and exciting way.  The research project makes up 25% of the team's total score. We'll break the project judges into squads of 2-3 each. Each squad will score several different teams in a variety of different areas including: research quality, communication, creativity, uniqueness and teamwork. Later in the day, the judges will get together to share what they saw and select the overall winners.  Project judges will need to arrive by 7:30 am and plan on staying through the awards ceremony which will wrap up around 5:00 pm. They will also need to review various materials that will be provided prior to the competition. We try to recruit engineers, scientists, programmers, managers, professors and teachers for these positions in order to provide strong role models for our future scientists and engineers.

Technical Judges:  Succeeding in FLL requires more than just a good showing during the competition. Our technical judges interview the teams to make sure they really understand how they designed and programmed their robots. This score represents 25% of the team's total score. Referees encourage the teams and help keep up the excitement level. These positions normally go to our UCCS students, but we often have additional slots available. Queuing volunteers need to arrive by 7:30 am to review the layout and schedules. The competition wraps up around 4:00 pm, but stick around for "high five" line during the awards ceremony. It's a blast!

Scoring: We need a small number of Microsoft Excel experts to enter and manage the competition and judging scores. The scoring team needs to be comfortable with Excel and its files. Attention to detail is critical. Adults only for these positions, please.  The scoring team needs to arrive by 7:30 am to learn how to enter the data and manage the files. They need to stay until the competition wraps up at 5:00 pm.

Registration staff checks the teams in, checks in volunteers, ensures all releases have been signed, and hands out T-shirts.  Registration personnel needs to arrive around 7:00 am, but is usually finished by 11:30 am.
