Alliance Rounds!

We added a new event to our schedule in 2009 and plan on continuing it 2010: Alliance Rounds.  In this exciting competition, all teams will be assigned to alliances consisting of two to three teams each.  The alliances will then compete in a rapid-fire, single-elimination tournament.  The teams on the winning alliance will all get trophies.

The rules for the Alliance Rounds are different than the rules for the normal competition.  Read these carefully!  No complaining at the event that you wanted different rules!

1.  Each team will draw an alliance number from a hat during registration.  Each alliance will have two or three teams.

2.  The Alliance Round Competition will consist of Qualifying, Semifinal and Final rounds. For the Qualifying rounds, up to six alliances at a time will compete head-to-head on three table pairs. When all of the alliances have competed, the scores will be tallied and the top six alliances will advance to the Semifinal round. All six will compete simultaneously on three table pairs. The top three scoring alliances will advance the Final round. Here, each team will compete solo on its own table. The final scores will be tallied to select the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. Only the 1st place alliance teams will get trophies, but everyone else gets bragging rights.

3.  Unlike the normal competition, each round is judged solely on the alliances score for that round. The alliance with the highest total score for the sum of the rounds, or the alliance with the single highest score -- but not in the Finals round, might not win the overall Alliance Round Competition.

5.  The referees at each table are responsible for the score. Alliance members cannot argue their score with the referees. All referee scores are final.

6.  Each team in an alliance must attempt to perform at least one task with their own robot during each round. Only two members from only one team may be at the table at any given point during the a round, but they can swap in and out. Again, every team on the alliance must attempt to perform at least one task during the round or the entire alliance will be disqualified and will lose the round!

7.  Alliances require a little strategy. The teams in the alliance need to find each other during the day and discuss who will try to do which tasks. The willing alliances will leverage the respective strengths of each of their teams to maximize their score during the rounds.

8.  Alliance round results do not affect team rankings for the normal award categories. Winning during alliance rounds will not increase your odds of winning the Director's award -- but poor behavior or teamwork during the alliance rounds could cause you to lose a top award!

The Alliance Round Competition is exciting and fun. It challenges you to work with other teams and leverage your best skills. You're really going to enjoy this!
